On the 31st August – 1st September 2019 we hosted the fourth Sewing Weekender in Cambridge, UK at the Murray Edwards College. It was a wonderful inspiring weekend where 100 makers came together to sew, chat, make friends and hear talks from designers in our sewing community. We thought it would be nice to look back over the weekend and share our favourite moments.
The Sewing Weekender is organised by us and Charlotte (English Girl at Home) and is hosted once a year, to be the first to hear about the dates for 2020, sign up to our newsletter on our homepage here.

Spoonflower workshop with Hannah and Rosie from The New Craft House, making knickers.
Saturday speakers included Alexandra and Caroline from Selkie Patterns and Tara Viggo from Paper Theory. Alex and Caroline are a sustainable sewing pattern and fabric business. These ladies talked about how caring for your clothes influences their environmental impact. Tara talked about why she chose to leave the fashion industry and start her own business. This touched on topics including fighting the idea of exclusivity that the fashion industry breeds and creating something that has inclusiveness at its core.

Sunday
Sewing resumes!
On Sunday our speakers were Juliet Uzor (Sew So Natural blog and TV sewing contestant) and Nina Chang of Nina Lee Patterns. Nina talked about the planning process, the ups and downs of sewing for your own wedding or special occasion, and for others’, what really goes into making a couture-inspired gown. Juliet talked about Wax print fabrics and how she uses and styles them. Juliet is also a master at ‘hacking’ commercial sewing patterns and will talk to us about how you can adapt these patterns to suit your style.
