Tempeh Bacon


There are two tricks involved with optimizing Tempeh Bacon’s flavor: cutting thin strips and boiling or steaming the tempeh before marinating. This allows the tempeh to really absorb the marinade. Enjoy this environmentally-friendly, protein-rich, and fiber-filled vegan “bacon” in grain bowls, on salads, alongside a breakfast scramble, or all by itself as a snack!

Tempeh Bacon


 8 oz organic tempeh
 2 garlic cloves (minced)
 3 tbsp organic tamari (reduced-sodium, or coconut aminos)
 2 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
 2 tsp onion powder
 ¼ tsp ground black pepper (optional)
 2 tbsp vegetable broth (unsalted, preferably homemade)



Prepare the tempeh for the marinade: In a steamer or steamer basket, heat the tempeh for 15–20 mins, then let cool.


Once cool, slice the tempeh into ¼-inch strips, place in a shallow baking dish and set aside.


Prepare the marinade: In a small bowl add the garlic, tamari, liquid smoke (if using), maple syrup, onion powder, ground black pepper (if using).


Whisk well and pour the marinade over the tempeh strips.


Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight, flipping halfway through.


Cook the tempeh bacon: Heat a stovetop pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the vegetable broth, followed by the tempeh.


Let the tempeh cook on one side for 2–3 minutes, then flip and cook on the other side until golden brown and heated through.

Chef's Notes

Instead of liquid smoke, add smoked paprika.

Use ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder in place of two garlic cloves.

How to enjoy
Add it to a charcuterie board!

Enjoy by itself as a snack!

Make a tempeh “BLT” or “TBLT” sandwich.

Layer it on avocado toast.

Add to grain bowls.

Crumble into salads.

Toss into stir-fries.

Add to a tofu breakfast scramble.

Prep ahead
Steam or boil the tempeh ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Store Tempeh Bacon in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
